Commission a Pet Portrait

Overview

Commissioning a pet portrait is a simple process. First, select a size and medium for your portrait. Then, supply a few photos of your pet, and I will sketch out a provisional layout.

Once you agree on the initial sketch, I will begin work on the final piece. A deposit of 25% is required at this stage. Thereafter, I will email you regular updates of your portrait as I create it.

Use the order form below or contact me to further discuss your project.

Photographs

I create all portraits from photographs, so it is very important that your pet is represented in the best possible manner in the photographs you supply. You can send photos through the mail or by email. All photos sent through the mail will be returned upon completion of the portrait.

Below are a few tips on taking photos of your special friend:

  • Ask someone to help control your pet and capture his/her attention.
  • Get down to the same height as your pet.
  • Take several closeups of your pet's face, focusing on the eyes. It is very important that I can see your pet's eyes clearly.
  • Photograph your pet in natural light. Using a flash tends to wash out features and alter your pet's true coloring. Try to avoid direct sunlight, however, as that creates dark shadows. If you take the photos indoors, place your pet by a window.

Medium

Samoyed Portrait, Pastel, 2004

I work in a variety of mediums. You may either specify a medium, or I can choose a medium for you that best complements your pet's fur type. In the Samoyed portrait to the right, I used soft pastels to convey the fluffiness of the white fur.

Below are a few descriptions to help you understand the differences among mediums:

Oil:
A traditional medium that produces very glossy, vibrant colors.
Acrylic:
A durable, water-based medium that produces a similar effect to oils but dries quicker, thereby allowing for shorter completion times.
Pastel:
A delicate medium that allows for the layering and soft blending of colors. Portraits created with pastels must be framed behind glass as soon as you receive them.
Charcoal:
A classic medium that creates an elegant and dramatic effect in shades of grey. Charcoal portraits must also be framed behind glass as soon as you receive them.

Custom Portraits

Pet portraits in sizes or mediums not listed can be arranged. Standard portraits come with solid color backgrounds, but I can create a detailed background if you wish. (Price varies depending on complexity). I can also include more than one animal in the portrait.

Completion Time

After we agree on the initial sketch, you can expect your portrait to be completed within 4 to 12 weeks. Shorter deadlines may be possible for special occasions. Keep in mind that December is very busy for me, so it is a good idea to order several months in advance if you would like your portrait in time for Christmas.
